Today the battlefield at Gettysburg draws an unprecedented number of visitors: scholars, artists, reenactors, the curious and the hard-core. One long-time student of the battle is Paul R. Martin III , an artist and teacher, who has dedicated his life to preserving America’s military past. Through countless trips to Gettysburg from his New York studio, Mr. Martin has infused his work with the spirit and emotion felt by veterans who sacrificed so much at this truly sacred place. His attention to detail, color, light and texture speaks to the nuances of the land and the monuments. His work transcends time and space to hauntingly remind us of the need to preserve these fields of battle to honor the memory of the men who fought for ideals they held so dear. Moreover, his work reminds us that like the men who fought there, Gettysburg has come to be a part of us all.
