January 2017: presidents message

President’s message:
January 10, 2017

Happy New Year!

As discussed at our annual Christmas/holiday party, we will be starting out our 2017 season with a President Lincoln documentary film titled. “They’ve Killed President Lincoln” (1971) in the Pirate Cove at Pearl River HS on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 7:30 PM.

Hosted and narrated by Richard Basehart, this dramatization of the events leading up to and following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United States, takes the form of a documentary as it might have looked and sounded in 1865, had motion pictures existed back then. Utilizing simulated footage and, in some cases, genuine historical photographs, this TV special speculates that assassin John Wilkes Booth was part of a broad conspiracy against the president, and that if such a conspiracy did exist, that Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton may have been involved somehow. Includes recreated excerpts of "Our American Cousin," the play Lincoln was watching at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., the night that history was forever and irrevocably altered.

This film also stars Joseph Leisch Jr. as Abraham Lincoln, father of frequent speaker and CMH West Point Chapter member Juanita Leisch Jensen.

In the Pirate Cove at Pearl River HS on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 7:30 PM.

Bill Gent: Civil War Weapons

A pictorial Power Point presentation on the best and least known weapons used during the American Civil War with Historical artifacts on display.

Rochelle Park, NJ resident Bill Gent has been a historical lecturer since 1997 and he has attracted audiences in five states and the District of Columbia. His subject matter can hone in on any aspect of the Civil War Between the States, and this month he will be focusing on Civil War Weaponry.

While a student at UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) he became enthralled by the university’s extensive collection of medical instruments and books. To expand upon his new-found knowledge he visited historic battlefields eventually joining a reenactment unit and Living History organization.

Mr. Gent never stops researching his role a process filled with some special experiences such as attending the past lectures of Shelby Foote and Edwin Baress, two outstanding historians and novelists on the American Civil War. He was also one of the key historians at Manassas VA during their Sesquicentennial celebration. And Gettysburg PA. His goal as a lecturer is to give people a realistic education and help them to shed the inaccurate ideas propagated by Hollywood and outdated history books.

He will detail the process of the effort to acquire the building, the restoration of the depot and the creation of the museum.

John G. Testa, a life-long resident of Peekskill, is presently in his third term as Westchester County Legislator and Minority Leader for the board. Prior to his County Legislative seat, he served 3 terms as Mayor of Peekskill. Before becoming Mayor he also served a four-year term as Councilman.
With an avid interest in history, Testa has worked to preserve local historical structures and promote local history. As a Revolutionary War re-enactor and member of The Brigade of the American Revolution for over 40 years, Testa lectures at local schools and organizations. He also secured the preservation of historic Fort Hill as parkland, a 40-acre parcel that was originally a Revolutionary War encampment site and headquarters for the American Army prior to the establishment of West Point. Under his leadership the United States Dept. of the Interior declared Peekskill a “Preserve America Community.” Also under his tenure Peekskill was able to establish a record number of National Register designations of local structures, including the first Downtown and Neighborhood Historic Districts.

Testa has served on the Peekskill's Conservation and Parks Advisory Board, the Peekskill Zoning Board, and served 14 years as a Trustee for Westchester Community College. Other civic responsibilities include The Lincoln Society in Peekskill, where he is a Past-President. Testa is a member of the Peekskill Fire Patrol, the Christopher Columbus Society, where his Great-Grandfather was a founding member, and The Peekskill Elks Lodge 744.

As mayor he was instrumental in securing the preservation of the Lincoln Depot, Peekskill’s original train depot where President-Elect Abraham Lincoln stopped to address the community in 1861, he now serves as President of the Lincoln Depot Museum Board of Directors.

John received a BS degree in Technology from SUNY Oswego and his MS degree in Technology from the City College of New York. Testa began his teaching career in 1980 at Peekskill High School, his alma mater, as an instructor in Technology and Social Studies, retiring in 2013 after 33 years teaching. “THE WEST POINT FOUNDRY” By Trudie Grace, Curator, Putnam History Museum, & Mark Forlow, Historian in Cold Spring. The Foundry was established in Cold Springs in 1817 as a cannon factory and became of critical importance during the Civil War. This was one of the first major industrial sites in the U.S. The foundry's story from its early years is traced through to the period of the Civil War and to its eventual status as a site of archaeological excavations. Production ceased in 1909, excavations started in 1989 and 87 acres purchased in 1996. In 2013 the site was opened as West Point Foundry Preserve. A great story and the wonderful effort has resulted in a fantastic living history. WHERE: Peter Pratts Inn, Croton Hts. Road, Yorktown Hts. Thursday, March 19, 2015 --- 7:30 pm Yorktown Historical Society presents for Women's History Month
“THE DISORDERLY WOMEN OF NEW YORK & THE AMAWALK MEETING HOUSE” By Renee Fogarty, member of Amawalk Quakers, Society of Friends. You have heard of famous Quakers Elizabeth Stanton and Susan B. February Meeting and Presidents Message
President’s message:
February, 2015

The Rockland Civil War Round Table is meeting at the Pirate Cove at Pearl River HS on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 7:30 PM. PLEASE NOTE DAY and PLACE!
(See Photo Map Below for location)

The RCWRT will present: Jamie Malanowski.

“Commander Will Cushing, Daredevil Hero of the Civil War”

No doubt many of you will know the name, but for those unfamiliar, William Cushing was an enormously fascinating figure, a very 21st century kind of hero who was famous in the 19th century and mostly forgotten since. Daring, inventive, preposterously young (just 18 when the war began), Cushing was sort of a Navy SEAL prototype, specializing in behind-the-lines missions. In his greatest exploit, a real David vs. Goliath affair, he went eight miles up the Roanoke River in North Carolina, and in the dead of night, in a driving rain, under withering fire, he stood in the prow of an open boat, and floated a torpedo under a fearsome confederate ironclad and sank it. He then escaped rebel posses and got back to the union fleet before midnight. For this triumph, he earned the Thanks of Congress, which is an official recognition no longer offered, but which in its time was more prestigious than the Medal of Honor.

What's most remarkable is that this glorious career came very close to never happening: Always something of a hothead and a maverick, at the Naval Academy Midshipman Cushing was also an underachiever and a prankster. A mere two months before graduation, Academy officials had enough of him and tossed him, citing his ``a talent for buffoonery.'' Fortunately for Will, war broke out soon after, and he found his calling.

Will was the youngest of four brothers who served during the war. The eldest, Milton, never saw action, and the second, Howard, fought in many battles and then went west and became a famous Indian fighter. The third, Alonzo, with whom Will was very close, was an artillery lieutenant who fought in many battles. On the third day of the battle of Gettysburg, Alonzo sustained two severe wounds, and yet refused to leave the line even as the 11,000 rebels of Pickett's Charge converged on his position. Alonzo died at his guns, a sacrifice that earned him the Medal of Honor, which President Obama presented at the White House last November.

This will be an outstanding meeting, so bring your friends and family to the Pirate Cove at Pearl River HS on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 7:30 PM. PLEASE NOTE DAY and PLACE! SEE YOU THERE!

Jamiee is also the author of the novels Mr. Stupid Goes to Washington (Birch Lane, 1992) and The Coup (Doubleday, 2007); the author of And the War Came, a history of the six months that preceded the start of the Civil War (Byliner, 2011); the author of The Book of Levon: The Trial and Triumphs of Levon Helm, an e-single about the life of the musician Levon Helm (Bolt Books, 2013); co-author with Kurt Andersen and Lisa Birnbach of the play and book Loose Lips; co-author, with Martyn Burke, of the HBO movie Pentagon Wars; and co-author, with Susan Morrison, of the humor book Spy High. Rosen; The Playboy Book of True Crime; The Fun Never Stops!: An Anthology of Comic Art 1991-2006, edited by Drew Friedman, Daniel Clowes, and Ben Schwartz; and Lincoln: A President for the Ages, edited by Karl Weber. Jamie lives in Westchester County NY with his wife, Virginia, and daughters Maria and Cara.

PRAISE FOR “COMMANDER WILL CUSHING”:

``Malanowski’s nimble prose serves the action sequences perfectly, and gives Cushing’s battles the weight and presentation they deserve. At these points, the book no longer feels like the typical historical read, but has the page-turning excitement of a thriller. Malanowski ends with a brief reflection on what this hero could have become had lived beyond his 32 years. Readers will admire both Cushing’s daring and genius as well as the author’s talent for capturing the full scope of them.” – Publisher’s Weekly, starred review

``Like many war stories, the tale of the young and rebellious Commander Will Cushing was tucked away into the dusty archives of history. Jamie Malanowski skillfully resurrects Cushing’s courageous adventures on the high seas during the Civil War in this action-packed page-turner. Beginning with Cushing’s youthful pranks at the U.S. Naval Academy and culminating with his triumphant sinking of the Confederate CSS Albermarle, Commander Will Cushing is a must-read about a daring young soldier whose extraordinary achievements have earned him a place alongside America’s most celebrated naval heroes.” -- Senator John McCain

“Jamie Malanowski has brought to life one of the great, little-known swashbucklers of the Civil War. A fun, exhilarating rush of a read, this is history told with flair and panache.”— Nathaniel Philbrick, author of Sea of Glory, The Mayflower and Bunker Hill

“A terrific book! It’s astonishing to me that I’d never heard of such an astonishing and very American hero. Will Cushing is like a character out of fiction or the movies — charismatic trouble-maker, patriot, half-mad can-do leader of men — and Jamie Malanowski beautifully tells the ripping yarn that was his remarkable life.” — Kurt Andersen, author of True Believers

``With grace, wit and derring-do, Jamie Malanowski revives the daredevil Civil War hero.'' -- Vanity Fair

Prof. Cynthia Wachtell: " Rhymes and Rhapsodies: An Introduction to Civil War Poetry

Cynthia Wachtell presents an introduction to Civil War poetry of the Union and Confederacy and explains its key importance in shaping the popular perception of the war.

Cynthia Wachtell is a research associate professor of American Studies and the founding director of the S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program at Yeshiva University in New York City. October 2014

The Rockland Civil War Round Table will meet at the Pearl River Public Library at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 8, 2014.

The RCWRT will present:
Prof. Edythe Ann Quinn: "Why They Fought: Black Civil War Soldiers and Their Hills Community, Westchester County, NY.

Through wonderfully detailed letters, recruit rosters, and pension records, Edythe Ann Quinn shares the story of thirty-five African American Civil War soldiers and the United States Colored Troop (USCT) regiments with which they served. Associated with The Hills community in Westchester County, New York, the soldiers served in three regiments: the 29th Connecticut Infantry, 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery (11th USCT), and the 20th USCT. The thirty-sixth Hills man served in the Navy. Their ties to family, land, church, school, and occupational experiences at home buffered the brutal indifference of boredom and battle, the ravages of illness, the deprivations of unequal pay, and the hostility of some commissioned officers and white troops. At the same time, their service among kith and kin bolstered their determination and pride. They marched together, first as raw recruits, and finally as seasoned veterans, welcomed home by generals, politicians, and above all, their families and friends.

Prof. Edythe Ann Quinn is a Professor of History at Hartwick College. She lives in Oneonta NY and her new book Freedom Journey: Black Civil War Soldiers and The Hills Community, Westchester County, NY will be released by SUNY-Press/Albany in June of 2015.

March 2014 Presidents message
President’s message:
February 2014

The Rockland Civil War Round Table will meet at the Pearl River Public Library at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 12, 2014.

The RCWRT will present:

Historian Bill Gent will present Hollywood vs. Reality: Civil War Medicine. His first person presentation and lecture will take an accurate look into the past into how a doctor was educated, period medicine, sound medical practices, transportation and care of the wounded and the grim statistics of the war. Presented with a display of medical tools, and recreated medicines in period bottles and chests.

Rochelle Park, NJ resident Bill Gent has been a historical lecturer since 1997 and he has attracted audiences in five states and the District of Columbia. His subject matter can hone in on any aspect of the Civil War Between the States but his special passion is the subject of medical practice of that area.

While a student at UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) he became enthralled by the university’s extensive collection of medical instruments and books. To expand upon his new-found knowledge he visited historic battlefields eventually joining a reenactment unit and Living History organization. He chose Major John Syng Dorsey Cullen MD.CMD (General Longstreets’s personal surgeon) as his first person impression He also used his talent to illustrate and recreate a historically correct physician’s journal and several period medicine chests.

President’s message:
February 2014

The Rockland Civil War Round Table will meet at the Pearl River Public Library at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, February 12, 2014.

The RCWRT will present:

“Saving Lincoln”

Based on the true story of Abraham Lincoln (Tom Amandes) and his close friend, Ward Hill Lamon (Lea Coco), “Saving Lincoln” combines elements of theater and cinema to create a new visual world within vintage Civil War photographs. When the first assassination attempt occurs on the way to Washington in 1861, banjo-playing, pistol-wielding Lamon appoints himself Lincoln's bodyguard. From this unique perspective, Lamon witnesses every aspect of Lincoln's fiery trial as Commander-in-Chief, soothes his friend's tormented soul, and saves him from repeated attempts on his life. Lincoln sends Lamon away on a mission shortly before the fateful night at Ford's Theatre, yet it is Lamon who redefines that tragic event in a surprising and uplifting manner. “Saving Lincoln” has been called "a new and different kind of cinematic experience…truly fascinating" (Film Journal International), as well as "brave, incisive, brilliant and entirely factual" (Harold Holzer, Lincoln author and historian).

January 2014 President's Message
President’s message:
January 2014

Happy New Year!

The Rockland Civil War Round Table will meet at the Pearl River Public Library at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 15, 2014.

Matthew Borowick will present:

Federal Failure, Southern Success:
Leadership Lessons from the Battle of Second Bull Run

In August of 1862, two American armies slugged it out along an unfinished railroad cut near the town of Manassas, Virginia. After three days and 20,000 casualties, Confederate General Robert E. Lee proclaimed it a “signal victory” over John Pope’s Union forces.

What were the circumstances surrounding this important, but often overlooked 1862 fight? And why did the Union fail so miserably, while Lee gained the victory that propelled him into Maryland just two weeks later?

Join us as Civil War News columnist and Robert E. Lee CWRT member Matthew Borowick explores the campaign and battle of Second Bull Run with a thorough review of the leadership lessons that remain valuable insights for leaders of any type 150 years later.

Matthew Borowick has had a lifelong interest in the American Civil War, dating back to his days as a first-grader when he took his copy of “The Golden Book of the Civil War” to school daily. In 1992 he joined the Robert E. Lee Civil War Round Table of Central New Jersey, serving as its newsletter editor, advisory board member and webmaster. Later, he helped established the Civil War Library and Research Center and was its first Executive Director.

Today, Matthew is one of four regular columnists for the well-regarded Civil War News, serving as the author of “Round Table Review”, which describes best practices of Civil War round tables from throughout the country. In 2010, he authored and published The Civil War Round Table Handbook - The Indispensable Guide to Running Yours Right, which is available on Kindle at Amazon.com
Matt earned a B.A. in Economics and an MBA in Finance from Seton Hall University and is employed by Seton Hall as its Associate Vice President for Alumni and Government Relations. He and his wife Kathy, who has been to more Civil War battlefields than she cares to admit, live in Monmouth Junction, NJ with their four children.
