The Civil War News: July 2000

Paul R. Martin III Exhibiting At Cyclorama.

GETTYSBURG- A one-man art exhibit by Civil War and historical artist Paul R. Martin III is open through November 19, at the Cyclorama Center Gallery. “The Vision Place of Souls”, exhibit features some 20 framed color pencil artworks from Mr. Martin’s Gettysburg series of Landscape Drawings.

A lecture series with the artist is scheduled for July 1,2 3, 2000 at 10 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM, as well as the same hours on October 21, and November 18.

Following the Gettysburg Exhibit which is hosted by the National Park Service and at Gettysburg National Military Park, Martin’s exhibit will hang in the Class of 1929 Gallery in the Eisenhower Center at the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Each piece in the Gettysburg Exhibit is accompanied by an abbreviated artists’ statement, first person accounts, poetry and historical notes. The battlefield views are arranged in chronological order of the three days battle and its aftermath.

Martin says, “The exhibit places the battle into historic perspective and attempts to address its significance to the American people as we move into the 21st Century.” He said he tries to evoke the contemplative atmosphere of the Battlefield and intends for his artwork to commemorate the thought-provoking nature of the Gettysburg Battlefield.

An exhibit poster and exhibit catalogue with full historical monographs for each piece are available for sale.

Martin recently completed a commission from the West Point Class of 1968 to create a 30 year commemorative fine art print. The work includes a circa 1968 West Point scene and an image of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Earlier in the year he created an artist’s rendering and fund raising fine art print of the proposed North Carolina Monument at South Mountain, Maryland, for The Living History Association of Mecklenburg which is raising funds for the memorial.

Martin also did a portrait of Robert E. Lee for the Robert E. Lee Civil War Research Center and Library. He was the featured artist in the November 1999 issue of America’s Civil War Magazine.

A portion of the retail sales of Martin’s Civil War prints is donated to specific Civil War preservation and memorial funds. His limited edition fine art prints are available directly from Martin and at galleries in Gettysburg and around the country. For information contact Martin at his studio, Silent Sentinel Studio, PO Box 551, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598. (914) 245-8903.
